Buyer’s Guide

Whether you use your garage as a place to park the car or a workshop, or even as an extended living area, finding the right lighting solution can make a huge difference to your quality of life.

How to find the right garage lighting to fit your place? The following buyer’s guide will introduce you to the differences of each garage light and explain the usage of them, to help you buy without hesitance.

Three Types of LED Garage Lights

In the past, the incandescent one dominates the lighting field, and then later the fluorescent light takes its control of light, both last long time in the lighting history. However, when it comes to energy-saving, brighter, and environmentally friendly, LEDs will be the final winner.

LED stands for “Light Emitting Diode,” which is a fancy way of saying there’s a tiny component built inside of the light that gives off bright illumination when power is on. Since LED is a semiconductor component, and thanks to its small size (e.g. L2.8 ×W3.5 ×H0.8 mm), LED light manufacturers are able to integrate it with various light fixtures to fit any particular places and areas.

And when it comes to LED garage lights, there are several popular types available in the market:

1. LED Tube Garage Lighting Fixtures

LED Tube Garage Lighting Fixtures

LED tube type garage light fixtures can be seen everywhere in the market, it’s one of the most favorite lights to use in the garage, workshop or basement, etc. These lights can be single or double tube fixtures, or multiple tube fixtures. The tube types can be also found in many sizes, such as T5, T8, or T12, each T means the diameter is 1/8 inch, T8 is 1 inch, T12 is 1.5 inch.

Among the tube series, T8 is the most popular model, you can see most of the tube garage light fixtures are equipped with T8 tubes. Depending on the fixture you choose, some can be mounted flush to the ceiling, others are suspended so they can hang lower, and some have the option to be installed either way. No matter which installation you choose, it has to be hardwired.

T8 tubes, work as the light source of the tube garage light fixtures, they are easy to be replaced when it comes to its end. Just buy a new LED tube to replace the old one, and you can still keep the light fixture, no need to replace the whole system. It’s cost-effective and design for sustainable use.

2. LED Bulb Type Garage Lights

LED Bulb Type Garage LightsLED bulb type garage light doesn’t mean that it has the bulb appearance or size, in fact, they are quite different in styles and much bigger than the normal globe bulbs. That being said, they share the same installation method as LED bulbs. They have a bulb base (E26) which can be screwed into an existing fixture on the ceiling, This is an extremely easy and fast installation, just take down the old light bulb and screw in the new bulb type garage light, the total process only takes a few second.

And not only does it has a quick installation, but it offers extra benefits as far as the lighting output and other features such as adjustability of the direction of the lighting. Takes the deformable led garage lights as an example, the wattage can be up to 200w or higher, and it has several deformable light panels you can adjust its angle to aim at the direction where you want the light to shine. It also features with sensor, timer, and remote control function.

Thanks to its great versatility, the led bulb type garage lights become the most favorite garage lighting to people.

3. LED Wraparound Garage Lights

LED Wraparound Garage LightsLED Wraparound garage Lights design with a one-piece acrylic lens that wraps around the fixture. It is meant to diffuse the lighting in all directions evenly, unlike troffers or panels which are recessed into the ceiling and can only emit light straight down.

This look of LED Wraparound Garage Lights is sometimes preferred when you want a more finished look to space as the bulbs are not exposed like they are with the other fixtures. And it creates a more“clean look”  to match your décor when mounted on the ceiling.

Basically, LED wrap lights are mounted flush to the ceiling, although flush mounted is the main installation method, they can be also suspended to hang low in the ceiling. Depending on the ceiling height of the place, you can choose either surface mounted or hanging. Be note that if you select the hanging light fixture, make sure it already includes the hanging kits.

What to Look for when Buying LED Garage Lighting?

  • Brightness/Lumens

Brightness is the main purpose that you want when buying a garage light, you want to light up your whole garage with a light fixture as little as possible and brighter as much as possible. So what specs determine the brightness of LED garage lights?

Lumen!

What is Lumen? The lumen (symbol: lm) is the SI derived unit of luminous flux, a measure of the total quantity of visible light emitted by a source per unit of time. *

In short… Lumens equals brightness!

Therefore, when selecting a lamp, you should always look for the number of lumens rather than the wattage. Because the light fixture with bigger wattage may not give off the brighter light as you thought it would, yet it’s more energy-consuming. For example, a 10w LED bulb is 1000 lumens, while a 60w incandescent bulb is only 600 lumens, it’s obvious that the 10w LED bulb is brighter and more energy saving.

Bottom line: The more lumens, the brighter the lighting will be.

  • Luminous Efficiency

Now you know that lumen is the key factor that describes the brightness of led light, however, even the same led lights with the same wattages, their brightness could be also way different.

Why?

LED itself has different quality and brightness levels. Generally, LED includes normal brightness LEDs, high brightness LEDs, and Ultra-high brightness LEDs. These LEDs could be in the same wattage, but their brightness is quite different, of course, the cost is also different.

For example, one 10w lamp equips with high brightness LEDs, its luminous efficiency is 130lumen/watt, another 10w lamp equips with normal brightness LEDs, its luminous efficiency is 100 lumen/watt. Although they are both 10w, the first lamp will be much brighter than the latter one, 13000 lumens>10000 lumens.

Bottom line: The same wattages, the higher luminous efficiency the better.

  • Easy Installation

As mentioned above, there are several kinds of LED garage lights, each one has its own characteristic and installation methods. Some are as easy as installing a light bulb, but some need you to do a little more wiring. Either way, they are good at a certain environment, such as a retrofit workshop or a newly built warehouse.

Considering the installation efficiency, the screw-in installation is the easiest and quickest way to set up the garage light fixture in your home garage. And you do not need to do the extra wiring, just screw-in and play.

  • Heat Dissipation

Heat dissipation is critically important to the light’s life. When led lights are working, it will generate lots of heat, and it’s considerable that the heat can be dispersed to ensure the light works properly. Otherwise, the LED’s lifespan will be heavily affected and it will die over time, or brightness is dropped dramatically after a long time used (see the definition of L70).

Among all the materials, the metal kinds are with the best heat dissipation, such as copper, silver, aluminum, etc. Usually, lamps made with aluminum material are with better heat dissipation than the lamp made with plastic.

  • Color Temperature

Most of the LED garage lights are with white light color temperature since the garage light fixtures are installed in the workshops, garages, basements or storerooms, etc, where visual clarity is paramount. Also, white light makes people more spirit.

However, if you have a preference for a certain color temperature or mood, you may choose the other available color temperature, such as warm white 3000k or neutral white 5000k. The good news is some garage light fixtures are with CCT changeable options, so you can buy one fixture but with several colors to use.

What are the features of the best LED garage lights?

1. Super Bright: LED Garage Lights are with high luminous efficiency up to 100lm/w. If the garage light is 80w, the total lumen could be 8000 lumens, providing super bright daylight illumination that you can see every corner of your garage, as well as offering you the best indoor lighting experience.

2. Energy saving: Although LED lights are super bright, it uses only a little power in comparison with incandescent and fluorescent lights. LED light features highly energy-efficient that’s why it can save you lots of electricity cost. The more LED lights you use, the more electricity bill you can save. And, since LEDs emit bright illumination, it turns out that you can use fewer light fixtures, overall it reduces the electricity cost further.

3. Ease of installation: Best LED garage lights are as simple as removing the old bulb and screwing them in, or it’s simply plug in. It uses no tools to install and no need to do extra wiring, installation is easy and quick. Basically, it serves the “plug and play” purpose.

4. Compact size: Normally the garage or basement in our home is with a low ceiling, to make full use of the space, LED garage lights should be in compact design or small size. So when it’s mounted or hanging on the ceiling, you will not have the sense of push and squeeze. And it also looks appropriate within the small space.

5. Durable and long-lasting: Quality LED garage lights made with aluminum material are better than made with plastic material. Not only does the aluminum is more durable and shatter and shock-resistant, but it also helps to disperse the heat more efficiently. It is with better heat dissipation than PC. Therefore, the lights can always work in a cooler condition, as a result of having a long life span.

How to Choose the best LED Garage Lights?

Now that you know the difference between each type of garage light fixtures and their features, it’s time to decide on which LED garage lights should fit for your car garage or your workshop, basement.

  • Check the ceiling height

You should know the ceiling height before you make up your mind to purchase the light. Since most garage spaces are with lower ceilings, between seven to nine feet high, LED wraparound lights or LED screw-in garage lights are more suitable to install under this condition.

Because they are surface mounted on the ceiling, it will not be an obstruction as they won’t hang as an ordinary shop light would, keeping them out of the way of ladders, boards, and other objects you might be moving around the space.

If you have a preference for the LED shop lights, make sure they are hanging in the high ceiling on chains, to avoid hitting your head.

  • Choose the high CRI one

If you’re doing the garage works (wood paints and stains, auto paint, etc.) that require you to see the real colors, always check the color rendering index (CRI) rating of the light before purchase. The CRI rating indicates how clearly or accurately objects appear in the LED light.

Generally, the CRI could be 70, 80, or higher up to 97. Just like with lumens, the higher the CRI, the more true color you can see. LED garage lights with a rating of 85 or above are best for rendering true color.

  • Sensor function

Having a sensor function on your light fixture could be a smart method to control the lights, especially for a car garage or carport. If the garage lights are with microwave sensor function, when you drive your car into the carport, it detects and turns on automatically and auto-turn off later after you park the car.

This is very convenient and saves electricity further. And, if you don’t want the light to stay on all the time, sensor function could be a great option to choose with.

  • Remote control

Garage lights with remote control allow you to control the light easily with just a press of a button, and it also ensures you always have the ability to turn off lights even if you’re not in that area, or too far away from the wall switch. With the remote, you can also carry it or kept in the car, so whenever you drive back to the home garage, you can turn on the lights with more freedom.

  • Dual-color feature

Dual-color is also called CCT changeable or CCT tunable, it refers to the LED garage light with two (three) different CCT at the same time, such as warm white + white (+ neutral white), controlled by a dual-color temperature controller to adjust the CCT between 2800-6500k. Most of the garage lights or shop lights are white color (6500K) by default, but if you want a warm white color (3000K), look for the light with dual color feature, so you can adjust the color temperature when needed.

  • Installation methods

Whatever LED lighting you choose should be easy to install. This is for your convenience. Deformable garage lights are with globe bulb base design that can just screw in, it’s the most simple and quick installation, as well as the LED corn light, which is also popular to use in the garage. For some retrofit lighting, LED lights with hanging installation or surface mounted can be considered too, as they suit well in the current construction and wiring.

  • Adjustable Beam Direction

It’s important that the garage light can be adjusted to illuminate different directions, so there will be fewer dark spots in the room. When it comes to the adjustable beam direction, deformable garage lights are a relatively new design. They are with 3 to 5 adjustable headlights that can be independently positioned. Therefore, your garage will have an evenly distributed amount of lumens. Making your workshop easier to work in.

How to Install an LED Garage Light?

In this section, we’ll go over general tips and recommendations for installing an LED garage light. For specific mounting and usage instructions, you can refer to the manufacturer’s manual.

First things first, anytime you’re working with electricity always turn off the power at the breaker.

1. Planning the Lighting Layout

The purpose of installing garage lighting is to give a nice and even distribution of light across the entire garage or workshop. You want to limit the number of shadowy areas as much as possible.

To serve the purpose, you need to draw a layout of your garage on paper, making sure the layout includes all different objects, such as workbenches, appliances, garage door, storage or shelves, etc. With this layout, so you can have a complete view in mind, and decide where to place garage lights, as well as task lighting, to get uniform illumination across the room.

2. Determine numbers of lights needed

If you’re refurbishing your garage room and want to replace the old bulbs with new garage lights, it’s a piece of cake, just buy a suitable new light to replace the old one, then you’re good to go.

But, if you’re decorating a new garage or workshop, you have to do it from scratch. Even though you have planned the lighting layout, you know where should have lights and where don’t, it’s a little bit tricky that how many fixtures you’ll need for it?

To do it, you need to do a little calculation combining the lighting characteristics and the measurement of the space. Luckily, there is a DIALux software that can help you easily achieve it. After you do the simulation in DIALux, you will know exactly how many light fixtures required according to the layout.

3. Check for available outlets

The other consideration to install a led garage light is the power source. If there’s already an outlet in the ceiling, life is good. So you do not need to do additional wiring to reach out the power, just plug in the outlet then finished. And, if it’s a switched outlet, you’re leading a charmed life.

However, if there are no available outlets close to your lights, you might have to get an extension cord or opt for a hardwired version. If you’re a technician or want to DIY, you can add an outlet to power your lights, or add a switch to an existing outlet. In any case, draw a lighting plan first so you can get yourself better prepared.

4. Determining the Installation height

Installation height is another important factor we need to consider when mounting led garage light fixtures. A fixture that is too high may not provide enough directed light to the workspace, which turns out you need to add more light fixtures or use another garage light that is higher wattage (not energy saving and pay more electricity bill); while a fixture that is too low could present a serious hazard if it gets in the way of people or other objects (especially power tools).

Therefore, for a lower ceiling (7 feet or so), the surface-mounted LED wraparound lights or deformable screw-in garage lights might be the best option. But for a higher ceiling (more than 9 feet), LED shop lights or other hanging light fixtures will be a good choice.

5. Install Safety Cable or Hanging Hooks

Deformable tri-panel lights are one of the most popular garage lights you can find in the market, not only does it gives off ultra-bright light but also can adjust the light angles. These deformable garage lights are also made up of aluminum material, which is with good dissipation but it’s also heavier. Some bright lights can be 200w, which means it needs to use more aluminum to help it cools, as a result of a heavy weight.

And since they are screw in the E26 socket overhead, if the twisting force of the lamp base is not strong enough or not good quality, plus the garage light is heavy, there is a chance it might fall off or get loosed. So it’s better to install a safety cable to hook the light, just in case.

What’s more, you should also make sure that the ceiling or mounting surface above this location can support the weight of the garage light.

6. Mounting the Garage Light Fixture

Once you have done the lighting layout and figure out the needed quantity, the next step is to do the installation. Most of the light fixtures you purchase will have a user manual included in the box, if you have no idea how to install the lamp, just follow the user manual. Once mounted, turn on the light and see how bright is it to light up the entire workshop.

Note: Before you’re mounting the lamp, always observe electrical safety, and cut power to all outlets and wires that you will be working with.

Other Things to Think of

Lamp color: Most of the garage lights are either in black color finished or white color finished, some are with other colors available. If you want the color to match your decor or ceiling style, go with the appropriate one, so it does not look awkward.

Waterproof function: If you need to install the light outside of the garage or in a carport, standard garage lights are not suitable, since they are mainly for indoor application. To install outdoor, the light should be waterproof and dustproof (IP65), this is to ensure the light can work properly and with a long lifespan.

Conclusion

It couldn’t be better to have a bright and well-lit garage, so you’re no longer need to pull the car outside to do any cleaning or detailing. We hope you can learn something from our complete guide for the LED garage lights.
